Post Op Dietary Regimen
It may take some time for patients to get used to the new eating routine after surgery because the taste buds may be affected for some time after. The sense of smell and taste is heightened, altered, salt and sweet flavors may be quite enhanced, and at some times overwhelming. Patients may not to be able to eat or enjoy some foods until the altered taste buds normalize.
Please ensure that any food eaten follows the guidelines the surgeon has provided. It is also important to understand that some surgeons will make the same recommendation for their duodenal switch patients as they do with their other weight loss surgical patients.
The basic principles for an immediate post op diet should be simple then move to more complex foods such as going from bland to sweet, sour, and spicy, then go from liquid, soft to solid foods. We should think of this as the same way we advance the diet of a new born.
